A spare and tension-packed build-up leads to one of the most unexpected left turns in a discography packed full of them. The songs are boundary-pushing and contain many jaw-dropping moments: one that stands out is the breakdown of “The Lotus Eater”.
Their keyboard player, Per Wiberg, who was only credited as a full-time band member on their previous record, Ghost Reveries, is given more to do on Watershed than he was previously (he was only a touring member before Ghost Reveries). But it’s a mesmerizing look at the commencement of one of the most singular bands in metal.Ī clear sign that the band and their leader, Mikael Åkerfeldt, had perfected and pushed their unique, progressive death metal sound about as far as they could, Watershed is the only Opeth record that could be described as sounding tired. Not even Opeth’s later forays into straight-ahead progressive rock and jazz fusion could be classified as easy listening. Orchid is not for the faint of heart, though.

But they still sound like a band that’s working on figuring out how to write these grand, winding, epic pieces of music. There are enough elements of the sound they’d later perfect on Still Life and Blackwater Park to keep fans of their later, more polished material happy. There are only the unfocused and messy ones and the undisputed masterpieces. Let’s be clear: There are no bad Opeth albums. Across 24 years and 13 albums, they’ve made some of the most challenging and fascinating music in the history of modern metal. They were (and remain) an anomaly within both death metal and progressive metal circles, but they’re also widely accepted as one of the most restlessly creative groups in music, metal or not. Even by the time their first album dropped in 1995, they had most of their sound mapped out: the juxtaposition between delicate acoustic soundscapes and crushing death metal riffs, supremely expressive guitar solos and leads, gothic atmosphere, brutal, growling vocals, and epic-length, labyrinthine song structures. The thing is that Mikael Åkerfeldt and his gang knew exactly what they were doing right from the beginning and it really shows on their debut album Orchid.Since forming in 1989 in Stockholm, Sweden, Opeth have carved out a distinctive niche for themselves in modern metal. If Opeth put out a debut album which was just death metal, then Orchid could be written off as an album where they didn't know what they were doing and hadn't stretched out their musical wings.
Orchid oddly contains more acoustic guitar trinkets then some later albums, played by themselves with no instrumental accompaniment.Īlthough Orchid is nothing like the band's further evolution into stunning masterpieces like My Arms, Your Hearse, Blackwater Park or the brilliantly dark acoustic Damnation, Orchid still needs to be mentioned in any topic of Opeth because their musical diversity can be traced back to this album. However, guttural death metal vocals do show up more then the clean and there is an imbalance on Orchid that would mean that sizing the vocal diversity on this album up with a later release would be unjust. Many reviews I've read have said that there are only death metal vocals on the album apparently, they didn't listen to the album at all or at least didn't listen the whole way through. They come across as loud roars and screams. They are more raspy and poorly produced, many of the lyrics unlistenable at times. Presented in Orchid is what will become of Opeth on a grand scale: brutal, melodic, acoustic, alternative, emotional and heartfelt by placing melodic death metal alongside acoustic and clean electric guitar rock.Īn equal range of guttural and clean vocals is still in full form on Orchid. The thing is that Orchid is just as diverse as Blackwater Park or their latest release, Ghost Reveries. New fans will stray from the album as more reviewers simply write the album off as being 'brutal' and 'sloppy' or 'solid death metal' as what I have read. It isn't mentioned much by Opeth fans but it is certainly a lost treasure. Opeth's debut album Orchid released in 1995 is a keeper.
